This documentary features a cavalcade of Australia’s best performers travelling across the globe to play at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Olivia Newton-John, Jimmy Barnes, David Campbell, Ursula Yovich, Gurrumul, Lior, William Barton, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Qantas Choir and many more gathered stateside as part of the G’DAY USA celebrations.

Cameras follow the unfolding tale, from the initial rehearsals across Australia in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. Then it’s off across the globe; with the first ever didgeridoo played on an A380 airliner, historic concerts in LA, the chaotic New York rehearsal and finally, the big one, Carnegie Hall

It’s a venue that instills nerves in even the most accomplished performers – and to add to the prestige, it’s the night America welcomes a new President.

The special features the likes of Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Baz Luhrmann and Rupert Murdoch, as well as a host of others in both LA and New York.

Producers rushed more than 70 field tapes back to WTFN’s Melbourne facility where work began in earnest. The team fashioned a strong narrative which combined the physical journey with emotional character arcs, producing an engrossing story. The finished show was completed and on-air with in weeks of the Carnegie Hall performance.

Network Ten aired the special, along with AMC Sundance Channel in the US, ABC’s Asia-Pacific Australia Network and Foxtel’s Ovation Channel.

First broadcast 1 March 2009.
