Michael McDermott

Michael McDermott is a producer and casting director who has worked across WTFN’s development slate and production output since joining the company in 2020.

In his role as Head of Development, Michael is particularly focused on how WTFN develops content for an increasingly fragmented television landscape. Alongside the traditional linear television market, audiences are consuming content across streaming platforms, social media and digital platforms, while international distribution and digital-first opportunities are increasingly influencing what makes a concept commercially viable.

Alongside development, Michael is also a Casting Director, having cast across some of WTFN’s best-known series including Emergency, Paramedics, Space Invaders, Healthy, Wealthy & Wise, and upcoming series Police. His work in casting has given him a strong understanding of what makes characters and stories connect with audiences.

Michael has also worked as a producer on WTFN productions including The Huntersand Healthy, Wealthy & Wise, giving him experience across the full production process and a practical understanding of how ideas developed in the room ultimately work on screen.

Before joining WTFN, Michael completed a PhD in Media and Diversity Studies, researching how audiences make meaning from queer representation on screen. His thesis was awarded the Nancy Millis Medal for Best Thesis, recognising outstanding postgraduate research.
